The New Google My Business Features Giving Power Back to Local Businesses

In a recent announcement on June 20th, Google My Business (now Google Business Profile) unveiled a slew of exciting features designed to empower local businesses and elevate their online presence. If you’re in the business game, you know how crucial it is to stand out in the digital crowd, and these updates are tailor-made to help you do just that.

Take Control of Photos

Back in July 2018, we learned from BrightLocal users that one of their biggest pain points was a lack of control over photos. Fast forward to today, and Google is stepping up its game. Here are three new features that give businesses more control over their visual branding:

  1. Set a Preferred Profile Cover PhotoBusinesses can now easily select the main image that appears in their listing. While uploading a cover photo was possible before, there was no guarantee it would be displayed. This new feature ensures you can showcase the image that best represents your business, giving you the flexibility to align it with current promotions or stock.

  2. Display Logos ProminentlyLogos are getting the spotlight they deserve! With the new rollout, core information like opening times and contact details will now prominently display your logo in the top-right corner of your profile. This small change can significantly enhance brand recognition among potential customers.

  3. Photo DisplaysSay hello to a new ‘photo display’ module that will showcase images uploaded by your business in a prominent way. Soon, captions will also be available, allowing you to add context to your images. This means you can highlight your products and services effectively, helping potential customers understand what you offer at a glance.

Attract New Customers with Welcome Offers

The introduction of the ‘Welcome Offers’ feature is a game-changer. Once a consumer follows your business, they can automatically receive exclusive offers saved in their Offers Folder. This is a golden opportunity for local businesses to incentivize new customers to engage with your profile and take action. “Welcome offers are a great way to get started growing followers and driving conversions,” says industry expert Claire Carlile.

Imagine the boost in foot traffic when customers come in with a code they received online!

Bring Customers to Your Profile with Short Names

If you haven’t yet claimed your Google Business short name, now’s the time! Short names make it super easy for customers to find your listing and reviews. Just a quick tip: get on the GMB dashboard and secure yours today—don’t let this opportunity slip through your fingers!

Extend Your Reviews Reach with Offline Materials

Google has launched a new site offering businesses social posts, stickers, table tents, and posters to help promote their Google Business Profile. This feature makes it easier than ever for you to create eye-catching assets that leverage your stellar reviews without needing any design expertise.

The materials automatically pull from your Google review content and core business information, making it simple to encourage reviews, bookings, and follows. This is a prime way to translate your positive online reputation into offline visibility.

Get More Clicks with New SERP Features

Last but certainly not least, the introduction of ‘Local Favorites’ has the potential to redefine how businesses are perceived in search results. The top 5% of businesses per category will receive badges, both digital and physical, that highlight their excellence. According to our findings from the Local Services Ads Click Study, features like these can heavily influence consumer choices. If you aim to be a local favorite, now is the time to polish your online presence and engage with your customers!
