The 22 Google My Business Issues SEOs Want Fixed

Google Business Profile (GBP) is a game-changer for local businesses. It’s like the digital storefront that can attract customers from the vast online marketplace. But let’s be real—it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. There are bumps in the road that can trip up even the savviest marketers.

We recently ran a poll among our network of SEO pros and local business owners to find out what GMB issues are driving them up the wall. The feedback from 310 BrightLocal users revealed the key pain points and the fixes they want to see. And let me tell you, the results are as enlightening as they are frustrating.

What Are the Most Common GMB Issues?

So, what did we uncover? It turns out, reviews are at the top of the list—specifically, the fake ones. A whopping 33% of users want Google to tackle this issue head-on. It's like having a noisy neighbor who just won't quit. Users are calling for GMB to clean house, not just with the spammy reviews but also with the networks behind them.

Moreover, control is a recurring theme in the responses. Businesses are clamoring for the ability to manage their listings better, which includes choosing which photos to display, getting rid of duplicate listings, and navigating the new GMB Agency Dashboard without feeling like they’re deciphering hieroglyphics.

Communication is another sore spot. 21% of respondents want Google to make it easier to reach support, and 11% expressed frustration over inconsistent or inaccurate responses. As one user put it, “Contacting phone support for Google My Business has to be the single most painful thing to do in dealing with Alphabet.” Ouch.

And let’s not forget the call for more seamless integration with Google’s other services—Analytics, Search Console, and more. It's about time these tools work together to empower local businesses.

Prioritizing GMB Fixes

When it comes to prioritizing fixes, the consensus is clear. Users want easier verification of businesses to be at the top of Google’s to-do list. Following closely behind is the need for clearer guidelines—because navigating GMB shouldn’t feel like trying to find your way out of a labyrinth.

Many users are also eager for Google Analytics integration to help enhance visibility. As one respondent pointed out, "The more data, the better! That’ll help us understand how users are using GMB and how we can make it better."

A Message to Google My Business

The feedback from users goes beyond mere frustration. It’s a rallying cry for improvements. Businesses want GMB to recognize that they are the backbone of this platform. As one passionate user noted, “With all the really smart people at Google, could they allocate just one to GMB that truly understands small business?”

Another echoed the sentiment about reviews, stating, “When will Google start tackling review fraud?” It’s high time for GMB to take these concerns seriously and act.
