Standing Strong: A Year of Resilience and Courage in Ukraine

By Myles Anderson

A year ago today, the world watched in shock as Russia launched an unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. For us at GMB Fox, the impact hit especially close to home. Our team includes 30 incredibly talented individuals from Ukraine, whose lives were abruptly turned upside down by this terrifying act of aggression.

Over the past year, we've done everything in our power to support our Ukrainian brothers and sisters. Whether it was helping them relocate, providing emergency aid, or simply offering words of encouragement, we’ve stood by their side. The courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment they've shown through air raids, power outages, and daily uncertainty have been nothing short of inspiring.

Today, we want to share their stories—stories of strength, hope, and the will to keep going even in the darkest of times.

Dima L: A Journey of Survival and Service

"My story began on February 24 at 5 a.m.," Dima recalls. Living in Kharkiv, his day started with the terrifying realization that the war had begun. "We thought someone was playing a bad joke, but it became louder and louder. Opening the window, we saw it wasn’t a joke—the war had begun."

Dima and his family quickly gathered what they could—documents, rations, funds, and a laptop—and began the long, uncertain journey to safety. "The way from Kharkiv to Transcarpathia took four days. Those were long days filled with fear and uncertainty, but hope was alive."

Despite the chaos, Dima felt a strong sense of duty. He registered with the military and waited to be called to serve. When the call finally came, he didn’t hesitate. "From that moment, everyday life ended. I lived in cold rooms with constant draughts and dampness, but we paid no attention because we had one wish—to stop the enemy and win."

Throughout this ordeal, the support from GMB Fox was unwavering. "The company provided funds for necessary items for the Armed Forces and food for civilians. This support meant the world to me, knowing my colleagues were behind us every step of the way."

Mykola B: From Uncertainty to Duty

Mykola’s story is one of unexpected heroism. "Zdorovia! (I wish you health!)" he greets, reflecting on the year that has passed since the invasion. "On the third day, I realized I wanted to help defend our capital. But, having never served in the army, I was sent home. They said I could harm myself or a friendly unit."

But Mykola didn’t give up. He joined the Territorial Defense Forces, leaving his phone number in case he was needed. "There were hundreds of men and women waiting for their turn. I remember a girl who walked over 20 kilometers to leave her number in case they needed a war paramedic. She was small, but she had a big heart."

After two weeks in Kyiv, Mykola and his girlfriend Katya moved to Ivano-Frankivsk, where he began his military training. "That spring, everything changed. As soon as I could, I took a vacation for three days and got married. Her love and support give me the strength to be in my place."

Mykola's journey took him to the front lines, where he spent seven months defending Bahmut and Soledar. "It’s definitely not easy, but it is my way. I know what I do and for what—for freedom, for our families, for our children, for our future."

GMB Fox has been more than just a workplace for Mykola. "I couldn’t imagine how strong their support would be. Cars, armor, warm clothes, medicine, sweets, drones—everything was sent to me and my squad. Even while I’m here, they continue to pay my salary, which is a great support for my family. Thank you all; I can’t wait to hug you when we defeat these enemies."
