[POLL] Are Local Marketers Ready for SGE?

By Sammy Paget

Alright, let’s get real for a second. If you’re in the trenches of local SEO, you’ve probably been bombarded with a lot of buzzwords lately—AI this, SGE that. But here’s the kicker: while everyone’s talking about Google’s new Search Generative Experience (SGE), not everyone’s exactly sure what it means for their day-to-day. So, we decided to dig into it and ask local marketers straight up: are you ready for SGE?

What the Heck is SGE?

Before we dive into the data, let’s break it down. SGE, or Search Generative Experience, is Google’s latest shiny object in the world of search. Launched in May 2023, SGE aims to bring generative AI into the search game, offering users a “snapshot” of key info right at the top of their search results. Think of it as a more conversational, detailed search experience. Sounds cool, right? But like any new tech, it’s got folks in the SEO world asking, “What’s this going to do to my local search results?”

Are Local Marketers Clued In?

Let’s cut to the chase. We polled 378 local marketers—freelancers, agency pros, and in-house folks—and here’s what we found:

  • 33% of local marketers have never heard of SGE. Yep, a third of the pros out there are still in the dark.

  • 41% of marketers don’t feel confident they understand what SGE is. So, if you’re scratching your head, you’re not alone.

  • 73% of marketers don’t know how SGE will impact local search results. That’s right—most of us are flying blind on this one.

“SGE is seeing constant updates and changes, so what we see this week can be different the following week. It’s an exhilarating time to be in the local search space... let’s just see where this ride takes us!” — Andy Simpson, Senior SEO Specialist at Digital Law Marketing

Will SGE Make Local Search Easier or Harder?

This is the million-dollar question. Will SGE make it easier for local businesses to get found, or will it throw a wrench in our carefully crafted SEO strategies?

  • Just 4% of local marketers think SGE will make it easier to appear in local search results.

  • 15% of marketers think it’ll actually make things harder.

  • The rest? They’re unsure. And honestly, who can blame them?

What Should You Do Now?

If you’re feeling a little lost, don’t sweat it. You’re in good company. Here’s the game plan:

  1. Manage Expectations: If you’re handling SEO for clients, now’s the time to start prepping them for changes. SGE is new, and it’s evolving. Let your clients know that we’re in for a bumpy ride, but you’ve got their back.

  2. Stick to the Fundamentals: As Dayna Lucio, Strategist at Amsive Digital, puts it, “Continue to pay attention to reviews, because this is another way that Google is highlighting those.” In other words, don’t lose sight of the basics—keep your Google Business Profile tight and keep an eye on those reviews.

  3. Stay Informed: If you’re not already plugged into the latest SEO news, now’s the time. Sign up for newsletters, join online communities like The Local Pack, and keep your finger on the pulse.

The Bottom Line

SGE is coming, whether we’re ready or not. And while it might feel like we’re all fumbling in the dark right now, the key is to stay adaptable. Keep learning, keep testing, and keep your clients informed.
