How We Can Support Women in SEO: Advice for Women, From Women

SEO isn’t just about keywords and rankings; it’s about creating an environment where diverse voices are empowered and celebrated. Women in SEO are making huge strides, but there’s still a long way to go in breaking through the industry’s historically male-dominated glass ceiling.

At GMB Fox, we’re all about amplifying those voices. Recently, we attended the 2022 Women in Tech SEO Fest, an event that wasn’t just a conference—it was a movement. The speakers touched on everything from analyzing SEO data to empowering women in the workplace. And while there’s been progress, the gender imbalance is real.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

In our Local Search Industry Survey, 35% of participants identified as women, compared to 62% men. That’s a big gap. Even more telling is that 80% of men described their roles as Senior-level, while only 60.7% of women reached that same tier. SEO may be all about numbers, but these numbers tell a story: it’s harder for women to climb the SEO ladder.

That’s why communities like Women in Tech SEO, founded by Areej AbuAli, are crucial. As Areej puts it, “We’re here to empower each other in a positive, inspiring, and beneficial way.”

Real Advice from Real Women in SEO

We reached out to women in the SEO world to hear their best advice. Here’s what they had to say:

Kari DePhillips, CEO of The Content Factory, says, “Get started sooner. When others on your team can’t brag about themselves, brag for them.”

Jess Joyce, a Freelance SEO Consultant, shared a game-changing moment: “A client told me they call because I talk like a human being. It stuck with me—I don’t need to change who I am to succeed.”

Jen Penaluna, Senior SEO Strategist at Evoluted, reminds us, “You can start in SEO at any point in your life. Try everything and find what makes you happiest.”

Dhriti Shashikanth, SEO Account Manager at Mindshare, advises, “It’s OK to not have all the answers right away. It’s better to research and respond later than to rush.”

It’s Not Just About Learning SEO—It’s About Breaking Down Barriers

SEO is evolving, and the community is growing more inclusive, but there’s still work to be done. As Estrella Alvarado, SEO Assistant at Brafton, puts it, “There’s more to SEO than the ‘scary tech stuff.’ If you understand user intent, UX, and have great writing skills, you’re already halfway through.”

And it’s not just about gaining technical knowledge. Katherine Watier Ong, Founder of WO Strategies LLC, emphasizes, “Your network in SEO is everything. Start building those connections and give back to the community as soon as you can.”

Breaking the Bias: It’s Up to Us

It’s time to take real action in creating a balanced, equal world in SEO. That means amplifying the voices of women, recognizing their contributions, and ensuring they have the same opportunities to advance.
