At GMB Fox, we believe the true spirit of the holidays isn’t just about the gifts we receive, but rather the joy we create when we give to others. This isn’t just a feel-good platitude; it’s a principle we take to heart in our community outreach efforts.
Back in 2016, our team in Valencia City, Philippines, kicked off a heartfelt initiative with a successful gift-giving event in Pinatilan. Fast forward to October 2017, we decided it was time to elevate our efforts by bringing holiday cheer to the Talaandig tribe, one of the seven Indigenous Peoples of Bukidnon. Nestled high in the mountains of Mt. Nebo, this tribe has preserved its rich cultural heritage through the generations, and we were excited to be part of their community.
However, as fate would have it, disaster struck. On December 22, the very day of our planned gift-giving event, heavy rains from super typhoon “Vinta” caused severe flooding in fourteen barangays, including Valencia City, where our team is based. Instead of celebrating, we found ourselves redirecting our packed lunches to support the brave local disaster responders.
As we reflected on that day, we knew we couldn't let the spirit of giving fade away. Finally, on January 10, when the rains relented, our team sprang into action. We loaded our rescue trucks and headed up the mountain, eager to fulfill our promise to the Talaandig community.
The moment we arrived, the atmosphere shifted. It was like stepping into a celebration of resilience and hope. The youth of the tribe greeted us with a vibrant dance performance in traditional attire, reminding us of the strength and beauty of their culture. Pastor Bitundo Tilucan from the United Pentecostal Church and our very own manager, Michael Adanza, shared warm welcomes, setting the tone for a truly memorable day.
Soon, it was time to feast! We served a delicious meal that included rice, fried chicken, lumpiang shanghai, and refreshing drinks. And let’s be honest—no holiday gathering is complete without a little ice cream. This wasn’t just any ice cream; it was made from purple yam, a local delicacy that added a unique twist to our celebration.
After lunch, the real fun began. The kids, clearly seasoned pros at play, dived into games and laughter, creating a beautiful symphony of joy. But the highlight of the day was, of course, the gift-giving moment. We presented gifts that included rice, canned goods, noodles, slippers, and t-shirts, plus delightful loot bags for the kids.
As the sun began to set, we felt a bittersweet twinge when it was time to say goodbye. It was a long day, filled with hard work, laughter, and community spirit. But as we left, our hearts were full, knowing we made a small difference in the lives of these wonderful people.
So, from all of us at GMB Fox and the Talaandig tribe—albeit a little late—Happy New Year! We can’t wait to create more moments like these in the future.
